Eva Baron and Joleen Mataele with the filmmakers.
In late May, the Doc Edge Film Festival was held in Wellington and Auckland. Among the many compelling films presented was Leitis in Waiting, the story of a group of transgender women (leitis) fighting a rising tide of religious fundamentalism in the Kingdom of Tonga.
Rei Foundation is proud to have been able to support Doc Edge to bring the film's protagonists Joleen Mataele and Eva Baron to New Zealand for the festival, during which they engaged with multiple audiences through Q&A sessions and other events.
They were also able to liaise with LGBTIQ+ support groups in Wellington and Auckland.
Rei Foundation continues to support Tonga Leitis Association through provision of scholarships to 'Ahopanilolo Technical Institute.
